What is the School of Leadership and Policy?

The School of Leadership and Policy is a new academic unit designed to prepare leaders, policymakers and public servants to navigate complex challenges across government, business and nonprofit sectors. It combines coursework and hands-on experiences to help students understand how policy is made and how leadership shapes communities.

Why is UA launching the School of Leadership and Policy now?

Leaders are needed at the state and national levels. The University of Alabama is investing in the future and taking this bold step to establish a new school as a tangible way to meet those needs. The School of Leadership and Policy will help UA meet workforce needs across Alabama and beyond by equipping students with practical skills and civic understanding. SLP will serve students’ growing interest in leadership development, public service and policy-focused careers.

How is the School of Leadership and Policy different from existing programs at UA?

While UA offers strong programs supporting leadership and public service, the School of Leadership and Policy provides a dedicated student‑centered school focused on hands‑on learning, interdisciplinary experiences and real‑world preparation.

Students will see offerings and experiences grounded in both leadership development and the theory and practice of policy creation and application.

Who is the School of Leadership and Policy designed for?

The School of Leadership and Policy is designed for students who want to lead in their communities, workplaces and public institutions. Those who are motivated to solve real problems and create positive change. It fits students interested in working in fields such as nonprofits, government, public service and other growing sectors. It appeals to students who want to build strong ethical judgment, communication skills and leadership ability. The School also exists for those who want to advance their careers in leadership by developing an understanding of leadership theory and practical application. The School’s purpose is to help students grow into confident leaders who can make an impact in classrooms, boardrooms, labs and communities across the country.

When will the first students enroll? 

Classes will begin in fall 2027. Expect updates throughout 2026 as the inaugural dean is appointed, faculty are hired and degree programs are announced. The University will provide clear and ongoing communication, so students know what to expect and when.

Will the School of Leadership and Policy offer undergraduate and graduate programs?

Yes. The long-term plan includes both undergraduate majors and minors and graduate degrees, giving students at different stages of their academic journey a place to deepen their leadership and policy skills.

Do students need to be interested in politics to enroll in the School of Leadership and Policy?

No. The School focuses on leadership across sectors, not partisan politics. Coursework and experiences emphasize skills, not ideology, including ethics, collaboration, data literacy, communication, economic analysis, systems thinking and public problem solving. Students can pursue careers in business, public service, education, health, nonprofits, policy or any field where leadership matters.

What will the student experience look like?

Students can expect a mix of strong academic teaching and meaningful hands-on learning. In the classroom, they will study leadership, policy, communication and real-world problem-solving with faculty who bring both academic knowledge and practical insight. Outside the classroom, students will take part in internships and opportunities that connect their coursework to real issues facing communities, organizations and public institutions.

Experiential learning will be a core part of the curriculum. Students may participate in simulations that mirror real decision-making, spend time in the field learning directly from professionals or work on community-based projects where they help address local needs. They will have chances to engage with leaders in Montgomery, Washington, D.C. and across Alabama. This combination of academic and applied experience is designed to help students understand how leadership works in practice and to prepare them for future roles with confidence and clarity.

How will the School of Leadership and Policy connect with Montgomery and Washington, D.C.?

The School will build on strong interest from employers and public partners who are eager to participate. Students will gain access to mentorship opportunities and internships with state and federal agencies, projects shaped by employers and opportunities created through industry and community partnerships. They will also take part in programs that introduce them to new and fast-growing fields and benefit from a network of Alabama leaders and national partners who want to support the School.
